What does a Vitamin D test measure?

Your body makes vitamin D in the skin from sunlight and absorbs it from food and supplements. The liver converts it to 25-hydroxyvitamin D, the main circulating form, which is what the test measures.

It reflects your vitamin D supply over the previous few weeks.

Who should get a Vitamin D test?

Vitamin D is needed to absorb calcium and keep bones healthy, and it plays a role in muscle function. In northern Europe, autumn and winter sunlight is too weak for the skin to make much vitamin D, so levels often fall over the winter months. In the UK, public health advice is that everyone should consider a daily vitamin D supplement in autumn and winter.

Testing tells you where you actually are rather than guessing – useful if you're deciding with a doctor or pharmacist whether to supplement and how much.

A result is a measurement, not a diagnosis. Your doctor can usually order it under public healthcare. Vitamin D biomarker guide →

Vitamin D test cost: common questions

How much does a Vitamin D test cost?

In our check on 15 October 2026, the cheapest Vitamin D test you can order yourself in Europe was €13.70 in Bulgaria, and the cheapest US online price was $47. Prices in Western and Northern Europe are usually several times higher.

Do I need a doctor's referral?

Not for the providers in our 'order it yourself' comparison. In the US an online seller's physician signs the order for you. Some hospital lists and Belgian lab tariffs need a doctor's request – they're marked in the table.

When is the best time of year to test vitamin D?

Levels are usually lowest at the end of winter and highest at the end of summer. Testing at the same point each year makes results easier to compare.

Can I take too much vitamin D?

Yes. Very high doses over long periods can raise calcium levels in the blood. Follow the dose your doctor or pharmacist recommends rather than adjusting it based on a single result.

How long after starting a supplement should I re-test?

Levels take a few months to settle after a change in dose, so re-testing sooner than about three months is usually not informative.
